BLOGS THAT WORK
First let me define what I consider a blog. It is providing of information people want in a particular genre. The author writes about it because they consider themselves an expert and have a passion for what they write about. While there is a need to discuss a variety of topics, the blogger needs to stay focused on one genre for people to continue to keep coming back to their site again and again. Recently, I have started blogging and people are asking all kinds of questions about blogging, therefore I decided to write this article.
About 4 months ago, I started to write a blog about Optimal Living. I know it has only been a short while and in the process, I have learned a lot! Here is what I have found out thus far, as to what works and what people are looking for from the vast internet. At first even though I was very actively posting on a regular basis, comments were very slow and far between, but as the word spread comments started to pour in and the momentum began to expand rapidly. It started with 10 comments the first week, and then doubled the following week. The comments have been on a similar growth path ever since and are much more than what I expected when I started.
Many people have asked, is it easy to write such a blog? The answer is a resounding “Yes”. However, you must write something you are passionate about, and that it is what makes it easy and results in a large following. Additionally, you must have a deep desire to truly help people with your blog, and not just make it about making money. People can tell when you are honest or not, so be mindful of your followers intelligence. Unlike me, most people have to make a living at it, but I have always believed that if you pursue your passion and do your best, people and money will follow you.
BLOGS YOU SHOULD SUBSCRIBE TO
While searching for information on the internet, you will no doubt come across some blogs. In most cases, you will be encouraged to sign up or subscribe. How do you decide if you should sign up or not?
Here are some of the questions to ponder over.
- If you really like the blog, look at the blogger’s background to see if you want to emulate that person?
- Does that person’s life inspire you?
- Does he/she write about things that are of interest to you?
- How often does he writes, is that too much, too often for you?
- Does he know the subject matter in depth, providing detailed information that leads you feel that you are learning some thing new?
- Do you see the blogger insisting you sign up for full information?
- Do you get too many emails to buy this and that?
- Read some of the comments to see if the blogger’s followers are happy?
- Try to ascertain, if the blogger mostly wants you to buy things or is seriously interested in helping his followers with lots of free but relevant information?
WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT IN A BLOG?
Give people the information that they need and want! Do it in a way, without making it a MUST for them to sign up for an email list, as this may lead people to question your motives. I know that most, though not necessarily all, will want to use their blog to build an email list to market their product. While I see nothing wrong with that, yet I feel you will be more successful, if you provide information that is not only helpful but also complete. Even though my posts are only 300 words, I do provide additional information that is complete. I do so through free reports with complete details in 1,500 words or so. However, if the reader likes what I have written and wants in depth information which cannot be covered in the free report, they can then buy my eBook for just 99 cent from Amazon. So, if your followers really want to buy your product, they will voluntarily come back to you when they need more details about the information, product or book.
People are not just looking for information, they want to be entertained, informed and most of all inspired. Today, information is available for free all over the Internet. So, for them to spend any money on what they are looking for, it has to be more than just information. They are looking for stories that go along with that information. I do that by writing about things from my own exemplary life, which most people find truly inspiring. Exemplary yes, but by no means perfect, for no one is ever that, though I have lived a great life. What do I write about, a great life that is all about optimal living. The blog contains all kind of information for all age segments on how to live the very best life possible. This is divided primarily into four areas, physical, emotional, financial and finally spiritual health. I am just finishing my sixth book, this one is on heart attack and will be my first eBook will be on pre-sale this month on Amazon.
Another thing I have found is that people like connecting with authentic authors, such followers are genuine and lasting. They are the most likely to tell their friends and relatives about your blog, in addition to sharing it on their social media sites. At least that is what I am seeking for my blog. I am only interested in followers that want to live an optimal life. That is not to say that they follow exactly my way of doing things to get there. My job is to provide them with a road map to the place where most people want to go in life, yet find taking the steps to get there overwhelming. People do not like to be told what to do, but want to be shown how to do it. So, I simply show them by using examples and stories from personal experiences as a road map. Also I suggest that they read other people’s material as well, because no one person can provide all the answers to your needs. I have done the same as well; sometimes going through twenty books in a month. Every book has somehow added to my reservoir of knowledge.
People do not read your blog, search engines do! People come across it using search engines while searching for information they need. An effective blog is one that can be easily found by a search engine, this will then help the blog appear in relevant search results. An average reader spends only a few seconds scanning for what they are looking for in search engine results. The goal is to show up at the top of the relevant search results, for this your blog title needs to be compelling enough for the reader to click on it. The titles needs to grab a person’s attention, and it should reflect what the blog is about and it must have the proper words for the search engine to find your blog READILY. Do not make it harder for search engines to find you by using catchy titles that do not reflect the contents that go with it. Do not make your reader guess what the blog is all about, use KEYWORDS, if your post is about heart attack, the word ‘heart attack’ should be in the title. This will help your post to be easily found on the internet and have your blog read by someone interested in heart attack.
Most bloggers, once they get someone to their blog, want to convert them into a customer. However, my aim is to help people with free information. I do realize that not everyone is financially independent like me or has a calling to help others. Most business owners need to support themselves via blogging, therefore their goal is to convert someone who visits their blog into a customer. Just keep in mind that these days every business has many competitors, so give people actionable ideas to benefit themselves, like in call outs. This will is not only help people but also the search engines. You will need to use keywords to describe what your actionable items are all about which will also result in more hits from the search engines.
Personalize your blog, why? Because people follow bloggers, not blogs. This means that to gain permanent followers; you will need to provide more than just information. Today, there are MANY other places that people can go to for information. You need to connect with them at a soul and personal level. That is, you have to be an exemplary person that they want to emulate. To do that you must come across as genuinely interested in their welfare, for them to keep coming back to your blog again and again. In order to attract a wider audience you will have to write about different subjects, yet within the same genre.
